Chapter 5-2

reply

“What’s wrong?” Goldenrod asked casually, not knowing what was to come.
“He’s dead,” Lynxheart choked, looking up to face the she-cat. Unable to meet her eyes, Lynxheart looked down at the ground.
In an instant Goldenrod was at Ravineraven’s side. A quick prod gaze way to violent shaking as Goldenrod tried desperatley to wake Ravineraven up. Unable to do so, she shot one last pitiful glance at Lynxheart.
“Get Swamphine.”
“But-“
“Now.” Unable to argue, Lynxheart dashed towards the medicine den.
“What is it?” Shadowsmoke mewed indifferently, not realizing that her clanmate had died.
“Swampshine. Now.” Shadowsmoke sensed the urgency in his voice and dissapeared into the depths of then. Before Shadowsmoke had even faded from sight, Swampshine rushed out blindly into the light. Darting past Lynxheart, the two medicine cats hurried over to the center of camp, then they realized that they had no idea what the problem was.
“It’s Ravineraven,” Lynxheart pointed out tersely, and the two she-cats darted into the medicine den, where Goldenrod’s wails were beginning to become audible.
Lynxheart peered into the elders’ den as several cats began to hear the commotion and padded groggily out of their dens, though with a heightened sense of awareness due to Coal’s distaster ealier.
“What is it?” Yeweye mewed with a hint of worry.
“Ravieraven’s dead,” Lynxheart stated bluntly, wincing, knowing that Yeweye would take the news harsyl. After all, she was Ravienraven’s daughter.
“No, he’s not!” Goldenrod shieked, hearing Lynxheart’s falt, numb response.
“Yeah, he’s just unconscious! Swampshine will fix him up!” Foxglove, who had awaked, meowed as well. Lynxheart cringed at the sheer defience and denial in their voices, especially Foxglove’s, who was Ravineraven’s mate.
Lynxheart and the gathering crowd of cats ebhind him immediatley turned towards the elder’s den, now knowing full well what was heppening. Every cats jostled around each other to get whispers of the conversation that the elders and the medicine cats were having.
“Sorry, Foxglove. Ravineraven is on his way to StarClan now,” Swampshine mewed softly, and Lynxheart could feel fur tense around him as the news rippled around the camp like a wildfire.
“How would you know? You can’t see!” Foxglove’s indignant yowl pierced through the silent, miserable ShadowClan mist.
“Foxglove. Calm down,” Shadowsmoke’s urgent mew followed, much quieter but not heard any less. Lynxheart flinched, feeling the anger that radiated from Swampshine even though it came from the elders’ den.
“You have to help him, Shadowsmoke! I’ve known him since I was a kit!”
“And you’ve known since you were a kit that this time would have come eventually,” Shadowsmoke mewed softly. Lynxheart noticed the tension in the air begin to subside as Foxglove began to be calmed.
Lynxheart, however, was not as easily mollified. He felt a prickle of indignation that Shadowsmoke was trying to calm her with reason instead of pure, honest concern. Not that Shadowsmoke wasn’t concerned, but she was telling Foxglove how she should feel, but not actually asking how she felt in the first place.
“You’re right. That doesn’t mean that I’m prepared, though,” Foxglove mewed softly and defeatedly. Lynxheart, though he could not see nor hear it, knew that Shadowsmoke had put her tail over the tiny black she-cat.
“It’ll be alright. Life goes on. Trust me. I’ve dealt with more deaths than most,” Shadowsmoke consoled. Lynxheart thought he could hear a tiny scoff, but he wasn’t sure. Lynxheart began to feel a priclke of ice on his shoulder just then, and he turned to see Froststar staring solemnly ahead with haunted eyes, eyes quite like those that Lynxheart had.
“First Coal, then this…” Froststar mumbled, obviously without intending Lynxheart to hear. Lynxheart fought to control his pricked ears and made no move. “I hope they’ll still have faith…” Lynxheart felt a pang of pity and guilt. Froststar was feeling the stress of leadership. What would happen if his secret meetings with Rubystar got out? Surely it would not only destroy him, but Froststar as well?
“Lynxheart?” Froststar’s gentle mew edged its way into Lynxheart’s thoughts, which he realized had begun to calm down a little bit.
“Yes?” Was Lynxheart’s automatic response.
“You know Coal the best. Should we tell him about this?” Froststar mewed tentatively, as if she was hesitant to trust her former leader and show her vulnerability.
“I…” Lynxheart paused, ashamed that Froststar had thought about Coal before he had, growing even more embarrased, as to his chagrin, he had no idea how Coal would react. “What do you think?”
“I… honestly, I think that telling him this will push him over the edge. Keeping it from him might destroy him even more, but it’s a risk we’ll have to take.”
“Really? That makes sense,” Lynxheart nodded his head, agreeing, but as he thought about it more, he realized that it was a risk he didn’t want to take. All he had to do was imagine a Coal with utter betrayal and shock plastered on his face, and Lynxheart knew he would not take the chance. “But I do think we should tell him.”
“Do you think he’ll be able to take it?” Froststar asked?
“More than if we hold it from him,” Lynxheart responded. Froststar nodded respectfully, but Lynxheart noticed a shift in the leader’s mind. She had made up her mind.
“True, but I really think we should wait. You can have him take the damage he may not recover from, or you can hide it and have a chance at negating the effects.”
“He’ll have to find out eventually, won’t he? When he reclaims his warrior name?”
“Ah, yes, that’s a good point. Perhaps we should wait a day first and see how it goes,” Froststar mewed casually, which was odd, since she was the leader.
“Fine by me,” Lynxheart put in, equally relaxed. He turned to face Sandwave as Froststar padded away. The tan tabby she-cat looked distraught.
“Are you okay?” Lynxheart asked worriedly. Ears immediatley pricking up at the sound of the former leader’s voice, Sandwave’s head whipped around, filling with hope and despair at the same time.
“No, Ravineraven was Yeweye’s father,” Sandwave stated miserably, even though they were both aware Lynxheart knew this. “She’s going to be so devasted.” Yeweye was Sandwave’s longtime friend.
“It’s going to be okay,” Lynxheart mewed consolingly, draping his bushy tail on Sandwave’s shoulder. The tan she-cat’s fur shot up for a millisecond but immedietly smoothed itself. Lynxheart winced at his own words as he found that he had nothing to say, unlike Shadowsmoke. Funny how he could dislike her for not finding better words to say when he couldn’t find any.
“Thanks, Lynxheart,” Sandwave mewed earnestly, her eyes filling with that emotion once again.
“You’re welcome,” Lynxheart mewed respectfully, and Sandwave shivered.
“You’ll be fine, too. We’ll go through this together,” Sandwave mewed, and Lynxheart felt a prickle of confusion. Sandwave wasn’t that close to Lynxheart. Why had she said something like that? Also, she had acted like Lynxheart was grieving heavily as well. Given that Ravineraven was one of his closest allies and companions, he should have been impacted. However, upon introspection, Lynxheart realized he was numb. He didn’t really feel anything except his heart beating loudly in his chest as the panic from the realization slowly began to dissipate. Lynxheart didn’t really feel sad about Ravineraven leaving, which was utterly despicable.
Lynxheart grit his teeth. Why could he feel anything? What would other cats say if they found out he didn’t care? He would have to hide it with clever words, but the panic and adrenaline clouded his thoughts. He doubted if he could make them believe he truly was sorry. Panic rose again, up his throat and into his mind. Why couldn’t he feel anything? Was he a monster? Was he emotionless? Was he too selfish to care for others? No, he cared for Coal. How would Lynxheart react if Coal died? Probably very badly. So why didn’t Ravineraven’s death unnerve him?
A soft brush against his shoulder scared Lynxhearto ut of his fur. He turned around to see Sandwave trying to console him. Evidently she had seen him stare at the ground with clenched teeth and had misunterstood it. Though she had good intentions, this move had started Lynxheart so much that the panic was able to take control. Lynxheart, despite all his efforts, could not stop shaking and found tears jerked out of his eyes.
“Lynxheart, it’s okay to cry,” Sandwave mewed, pressing her head against his. Lynxheart breathed a sigh of relief inwardly. Sandwave was misinterpreting his panic as grief. That, however, did nothing to ease the fear. The best Lynxheart could do was let the tears run.
Lynxheart began to become aware of the several eyes boring into head. Though he was too overcome with self-pity to look up, he could feel the concerned gazes of Aspensong, Crowsand, Cypressroot, and surprisingly Twoheart.
Lynxheart looked up, his surprise giving him strength. Easily he picked out his three friends and the odd-eyed white tom standing a little way behind him. They caught each other’s eyes for a millisecond, and Lynxheart looked away shamefully. Then, he became aware of feet padding towards him. He looked up, expecting one of his three friends, but no, it was Twoheart. The others were standing back awkwardly, too scared to touch Lynxheart’s feelings.
Twoheart came and sat down on the other side of Lynxheart from Sandwave. Graditude arose from the she-cat, but the white tom avoided eye-contact with both. Instead, he stared off into space.
“I know what it’s like,” Twoheart started quietly, and hesitantly. “losing a loved one.”
Lynxheart stared back in shock. Twoheart had never lost a loved one! Then, Lynxheart realized he was talking about Coal, as if he were dead. Rage bubbled up inside Lynxheart. Coal was far from dead! If Twoheart insisted on giving up on his friend, then Twoheart wasn’t as good as a friend as Coal had always described him as.
“Okay. We can all just grieve together. It’ll be easier,” Sandwave said, though Lynxheart didn’t want to be around anybody anymore. He didn’t want to have to struggle through his life AND manage all his relationships at once. Storming off melancholocally, Lynxheart ingored the cries from Sandwave and Twoheart, knowing that eventually, they would leave him alone to “grieve” for Ravineraven.
Lynxheart stalked out of camp, his mind whirling. Everything had gone wrong. His leadership, his relationship with Coal, everything! The former leader doubted if Coal would ever heal from the wounds current events had inflicted upon him, and the wounds he had inficted on others.
Lynxheart sank his claws into the ground. How was resonsible for Coal’s wellbeing, yes, but really, Coal was suffering so much more than him. In fact, a lot of cats were suffering so much more than him. His stupid self-pity was illegitamate and contempible. He didn’t deserve to feel this way while cats like Coal sufferered alone.
Lynxheart wished desperatley to see the young black tom again, even though it was a risky move. Lynxheart didn’t care about what Coal acted like, because he would still love him anyway. They had come to far to ever hate one another now. Lynxheart would never give up on him like Twoheart had done. Coal was his only son.

Lynxheart baby are you okay?

My favorite part about this is when Lynxheart thinks his feelings are illegitimate because people are going through "worse things" and here he is worrying about himself

@WildfireK: when there's an awkward silence it's usually because of me heheh.
So I'll just fill in the gap by starting on a game rant, and then the people leave because they have no clue what I'm talking about, which is fine with me.
